What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a globally popular chatbot launched by OpenAI. This AI chat tool is built on OpenAI's GPT-4 language model, capable of performing various natural language processing (NLP) tasks such as summarization, classification, question answering, and human-like error correction. ChatGPT is a revolutionary technology that elevates people's work efficiency to a new level, making their lives easier.
Who developed ChatGPT?
ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot, was developed and owned by OpenAI. Elon Musk and Sam Altman co-founded it as a non-profit company in 2015. In 2018, Musk withdrew from OpenAI and no longer held shares in the company. Initially, the company received $1 billion from Silicon Valley venture capitalists to start building neural networks.
In 2019, OpenAI raised another $1 billion in funding from Microsoft. They began using Azure supercomputers to construct these large-scale language models. Fast forward to 2023, Microsoft invested $10 billion in OpenAI, acquiring a total stake of 49%. Other investors, including Khosla Ventures, also held 49%, while OpenAI retained only 2% ownership.
How does ChatGPT work?
Before ChatGPT, there were existing artificial intelligence chatbots, but they didn't garner widespread attention because they weren't conversational. However, in 2017, Google introduced a neural network architecture called The Transformer in their paper "Attention is All You Need," which created a paradigm shift in training large language models (LLMs).
Compared to other neural networks, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and long short-term memory networks (LSTMs) pale in comparison to the Transformer network. RNNs have issues with long-term dependencies, while LSTMs struggle to focus on the correct words in long sentences to produce accurate outputs.
The Transformer network revolutionized the training of language models by processing entire inputs at once, unlike RNNs which handle one word at a time. Additionally, the Transformer allows for parallel processing of multiple inputs, reducing computational costs and speeding up training.
Realizing the potential of the Transformer, OpenAI decided to leverage this network and train models based on its architecture. The training process for these models mainly involves three steps: generative pre-training, supervised fine-tuning, and reinforcement learning based on human feedback.
How to use ChatGPT?
ChatGPT has a basic version that is available for free. To use ChatGPT, you just need to visit their official website (https://chat.openai.com/chat). There's no need to download anything; simply go to the ChatGPT page and log in. You can choose to register with your email or log in with your Google or Microsoft account.
The web interface of ChatGPT is user-friendly for all users. It includes a text box for users to input queries and an area to display the results. After entering your text prompt, you'll receive a response from ChatGPT.
